Oh wow. Are we sure we want these things near our brains?!?!

I did some checking to make sure this wasn’t an urban legend. Surprisingly, there are a lot of opinions about this! Suspicions arose because these videos appeared within a day or two (one in English, others in Germany, China, etc). Another suspicion was that only *certain* cell phones would pop the popcorn, so some people thought this was all a marketing scheme to get people to buy these particular cellphones. I don’t know why they think this– I would be more inclined to stay far, far away from phones that fry things!

There’s an interesting news story at Wired.com here. The author of the story says it’s all a fake because “it just can’t happen.” But there are a ton of comments by others who say it can. They get into all this technical stuff, about microwaves, radiation, and etc. How hard is it to figure out– I mean, just get some cell phones together and TRY IT.

I only have two cell phones in the house, and both are tracfones. :( Otherwise, I’d try it for sure! If you test this out, please oh PLEASE come back and tell me your results! I’d LOVE to know!

At any rate, it’s a hilarious video!

  1. This looks like a job for Mythbusters!!! I love that show.

  2. That video freaked me out the first time I saw it, too!

It’s supposed to have been a publicity stunt (http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2008/06/bluetooth-compa.html). While it certainly got lots of attention, I don’t appreciate the fear-mongering as much, since I use my cell phone a lot.

  3. From what I’ve heard, the video is fake, and was produced by a company that sells bluetooth headsets.

I always go to snopes if I want to check on the validity of something I think might be an urban myth.
