When it comes to blogging, are you uber-creative? About your template? I have visited some absolutely phenomenal blogs, with absorbing narrative and eye-popping photography… but a really lousy template. In the blogging world, we have these unwritten rules about blog and website templates: no auto-play videos or music, no black or dark backgrounds, no bandwidth-sucking glittery graphics… and a comfortable, easy-to-navigate template is a MUST.
I’ve cooled my jets a little, but when I first started building websites, and then began blogging, I searched high and low for the PERFECT template. For most of my blogs, I’m pretty happy with what I have, but I do need to spruce up a few of my websites. From time to time, I search around for templates, or look into building my own from scratch. As soon as I am dine with my home renovation project, I’m going to have to fine-tune a few of my sites.
How about you? Take a good, hard look at your online space. Do you like it? Do your readers like it? Is it efficient and user-friendly?
If you are looking for a place to build your own, custom-designed website, take a peek at HPage.com. There, you can build a free website. They offer 300MB of free storage, too. They also have templates for building your own forum, newsletter, guestbook, contact form (every website should have a contact form), gallery, and other nifty html hacks (like disabling the right-click on your website!). It’s free to register, free to make your own template. I toodled around with the site for a bit. I started with a basic HPage.com design, with the intent to build around it. It’s very pretty! You use your mouse to make changes.
If you want to REALLY build from scratch, you can do that, too. Pretty neat! And it’s a good way to learn the basics of website design. Check it out. Together, we can end blog ugliness!
