Happy Yogi Berra Appreciation Day!

Blabber, Fun

Last year on this day, I posted for Yogi Berra Appreciation Day. Here we are again, a whole ‘nother year later! Woohoo!

In case you didn’t know, Yogi Berra was a baseball player. His real name is Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra. He was born in 1925. He played as catcher for the New York Yankees. I don’t know anything about baseball, except that Yogi was one of the greatest “malapropists” in the history of mankind. LOL. He’s known for saying some of the most hilarious stuff! Here are my favorites. I’m sure you have heard these at one time or another!

“It ain’t over til it’s over.”

“Nobody goes there anymore; it’s too crowded.”

Once, Yogi’s wife Carmen, asked, “Yogi, you are from St. Louis, we live in New Jersey, and you played ball in New York. If you go before I do, where would you like me to have you buried?” Yogi replied, “Surprise me.”

 that gets me every time. LOL

“Always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.”

“Half the lies they tell about me aren’t true.”

“I want to thank you for making this day necessary.”

“We made too many wrong mistakes.”

Yogi sauntered into a pizza parlor and ordered one small pizza. The pizza employee asked him if he wanted the pizza cut into 6 or 8 pieces. Yogi sighed, “Oh, make it 6; I don’t think I could eat 8.”

“You can observe a lot by watching.”

“He hits from both sides of the plate. He’s amphibious.”

Someone told Yogi that was was so cool! He replied, “Thanks, you don’t look so hot yourself!”

“When you come to a fork in the road … take it.”

“I usually take a two hour nap from one to four.”

“Never answer an anonymous letter.”

“I never blame myself when I’m not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn’t my fault that I’m not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?”

“I think Little League is wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house.”

Someone once asked Yogi for the time. He answered, “Do you mean now?”

“I wish I had an answer to that because I’m tired of answering that question.”

“I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did.”

“It’s never happened in the World Series competition, and it still hasn’t.”

“If you ask me anything I don’t know, I’m not going to answer.”

Now, some malapropisms are attributed to Yogi, but he truly never said them. I *think* that’s what he meant when he said:

“I never said most of the things I said.”

Yogi has a website devoted in his honor. Another has a good (but far too brief) list of Yogi-isms.

“Surprise me.” That’s my favorite. 🙂

Casey Stengel, Yankee manager from 1949-60–during Berra’s era–was also a great malapropist, as in “Never make predictions, especially about the future.”

Rebecca, just what I was thinking, too. What was it about the Yankees? I’ll have to ask my son who’s a sports editor and longtime Yankee’s fan.
