I guess I’m officially making this into a meme, but Beetle and Kathy started it. They both wrote posts about how they came up with their blog’s name. I thought their stories were very interesting, and I thought, “Hey! I wonder if any of MY readers wonder where I got my name? Wouldn’t it be cool to write about it?!”
[crickets chirping]
So I, uh, decided to write a post about it because I felt like writing about it….
I never start out on the right foot. Yes, ladies and gentlemen! I was not always as witty and charming and suave as I am now!
I’m a bit of a clutz and am more of a “second-chance” kind of gal, as my Blog Name Story will soon tell you…

I’d been a blogger for… gee, five years!… before I started thinking about a Mommy Blog (Freaky Frugalite is a “mommy blog.”). Early in the 2000′s, I had a political blog, but ranting about politics gets really old after a while. How many different ways can you say “the government stinks”? So after the death of Terri Schiavo and getting angina from worrying about all the crazies running the countries, I quit. But only for a little while. Blogging is addictive, and I’ve always been writing stuff, ever since I was a kid. I just HAD to create another!
So I started a new blog, over at Blogspot (this was before they morphed into Blogger, before Google bought them out– ah, those good old indie days!). It was a travel blog, and I do still post on it from time to time: New York Traveler at Blogspot. I started up that and New York Renovator. They were journals of all the fun and crazy stuff we do around here. After about a year and a half, I realized that I could make some money from blogging, and joined a few companies that paid me for it. My elevated levels of PageRank went into the toilet (I just hate Google) and I needed to build some more blogs that I could monetize.
YES! This blog was created as a pure means of monetization! But it has kind of grown on me, you know? And after getting some really great response and making some terrific friends in the blogosphere (that’s YOU), I’m very attached to this blog. I couldn’t ever dump it (“flip” it as we say in the pro-blogging world). I care about my readers and, while I do monetize it, I try to make the posts here as entertaining, informative, and as fun and resourceful as I can.
So. The name. I was sitting in a diner with the family, telling them of my plans to start a new blog. After the groanings ended, I asked them for some opinions on a name. I wanted it to be a place where I could review products, discuss online shopping and deals, be a place where moms could come to discover new products and save money. “Frugal” is a buzzword in Upstate New York, because everything is so blasted expensive. So I wanted the word “frugal” in it. After much discussion, I decided on “FrugalGoolgol.com.”
yeah. Pretty bad, huh?
Well, googol means 10 to the 100 power– so my domain would mean frugal multiplied exceedingly! OK OK it wasn’t the best name in the world, but Mom.com was taken! Gah! And so were all the other good ones!!
Well, it was a cold, frosty night in February 2008 when I was at GoDaddy… and I hit the “Order Now” button before checking the spelling. I didn’t realize it until a week later, but I had SPELLED the domain name WRONG. It was supposed to be FrugalGoogol.com not FrugalGoolgol.com!
yeah. Pretty bad, huh?
So I did not know it when I placed the domain order. I realized my spelling error a week later, in mid-sentence while hashing out problems with my web hosting tech support.
Embarrassed, I asked him if I could change the domain name, that I had goofed. But it was set in stone.
He said he wouldn’t charge me extra for a new domain, though…. and off the cuff I came up with “FreakyFrugalite.com.” I thought it was a better fit, for I guess I am a little intense, a little quirky. “Freaky” seemed to suit me. And “Frugalite,” while it isn’t a true word, described my lifestyle– as a stingy, money-grubbing Scot thrifty, resourceful lass who hates to pay more than she has to.
That’s my story.
So what’s yours? Some people’s domains I do really wonder about. This post would probably be a million words long if I listed all the blogs I wonder about. Please tell me about yours. Write a post and leave a link in the comments here, or leave your story in the comments here. I’d would LOVE to read it!
Thanks for reading this far. It’s proof that you are a truly devoted friend!
P.S. Oops, in researching this idea, I guess it’s not my idea to make it into a meme– someone else already did it. Apparently, there’s even a special day set aside for it: How I Named My Blog Day. So I guess I’m a little late, but I don’t care!

Great story! I’ve wondered about your blog name. :-)
I wrote a 2-part post explaining mine. Here’s the link to part 1.

I like the name Freaky Frugalite – it says thrifty, but fun, not obnoxiously uptight about it. :D and I enjoy your blog even monetized. Bonus – you ADMIT you monetize. I am cool with that. I do not really like it when people pretend otherwise – not fooling anybody! I am in serious need of updating my blogroll (my whole page really) and will add this when I do.
I recently answered your question on my blog, so I’ll tell you here. Mine is http://whaleears.blogspot.com/ it’s primarily a mommy blog, but I also touch on travel and expat living in the Middle East, and recipes, and crafts… even Paganism, veteran issues, and other misc. blather. It was meant primarily as a means of keeping in touch with family, but it has expanded to include IRL and online friends. I called it “Whale Ears and Other Wonderings” because of a crazy conversation my kids were having (http://whaleears.blogspot.com/2007/11/in-beginning.html) and listening to them reminded me of all the things I’ve learned from them, ie. “do whales have ears?”, and of the gift they’ve given me of looking at the world from a different perspective.

Ack! Too bad about the name spelling thing! If it’s any consolation, when I moved to WordPress, I had set up a “test blog,” junkdrawerblog.NET. I imported all my posts and set everything up, then I wanted to just redirect to junkdrawerblog.net, but they couldn’t just do that. So I had to do everything over again with the .com. I was such a noob and had no idea what I was doing. It’s amazing that I figured it out at all.
I like Freaky Frugalite. And it’s easy to spell!

Beth- Thanks for participating! I’ll check it out. :D
Connie– yours was one of the names I did wonder about. Whale ears?! LOL!! Kids are pretty funny. My in-laws were in the military (the Hubs is an AF brat), and they lived in the Middle East for a while. That was right before the Persian Shah fled Iran and the Tehran Embassy kidnappings… it was a pretty scary time to be abroad. I’d love to see the Middle East, now that things have calmed down somewhat.
Kathy– yeah, it’s easier to spell! LOL. Good thing! :S And I hate transferring blogs. I did it from Blogger to WP, and then I had to do it from WP to WP with another host. It’s always a “hold your breath I hope this works” kind of experience.

I like your current name MUCH better.
I used to visit a political forum years ago and would rant about various things and sometimes get kind of snarky. One poster was named the King of Pith and they named me Queen. Since I knew that was a rare title, I used that for my blog.

I don’t really have a good story about naming my blog. When I started I knew almost nothing about blogging, but luckily I had enough sense in my head to pick something general, not too hard to remember, and not too hard to spell. Plus, would you believe “carolesthoughtfulspot” wasn’t taken, ha ha? It is kinda long I admit, but it was the best I could come up with – I haven’t even ever thought of something better in the meantime. The end.

I’ve visited you more or less regularly for nearly a year. I’ve often wondered about the name, which is great. It’s really catchy with just a touch of self deprecation. Oh, and the lady bug is wizard. Love it! Lately, I find myself taking more time to read your posts and increasingly find them enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your story.

Oh, I like this where everyone is posting their stories!! I guess I’ll have to re-post mine too?? It’s really fun to see how the blogs got their names.

This was fun and informative! My website is Ollie McKay’s Chic Boutique, so the BLog is “The Chic Boutique Blog” – And my website is named after my grandmothers! One was Olive and they called her Ollie and the other went by Daisy McKay!
) Have a beautiful day all!

What a great story – and a great idea. I always think mine is self-explanatory, but maybe it’s not.
Being the skeptical sort and the sarcastic sort, one of my everyday responses to life in general was, “yeah, right.” Kinda like, “oh, sure, I believe that.” *wink, wink* I didn’t realize how often I said it until a former pastor (!) picked up on it: i.e., “As Jean would say, ‘yeah, right.’”
So when I decided to join the blogging world, ignorant as I was and not knowing ANYBODY out there, one thing I didn’t have to think about was the name. That had already been chosen for me.

Thanks for the entertaining story. I like the current name a lot. I just wanted to point out a spelling mistake in the story, a replication of the spelling mistake on the application form, which confused me for a second while reading. You write After much discussion, I decided on “FrugalGoolgol.com” and explain the meaning of googol (when I was asking myself whether my eyes or my memory is bad) and then afterwards explain your misspelling on the application form where you state that you had wanted “FrugalGoogol” (not FrugalGoolgol).

I love your blog name. I lived in New England for years, where we were all frugal (actually we were cheap, but frugal sounds classier). I created my blog after my website, so I just used the same name for my blog too. Although now I think I should make up a really good story since my story sounds so lame.

“Freaky Frugalite.” Descriptive, catchy, sticks.
Long story! Wow!
I got my blog title from 2 Corinthians 3:18. I wanted to say that it was about my journey down this path of life, leading to eternal life, basically coming closer and closer to the image of Christ in me, being transformed into His image.
So, I became “the Other Alice” going through a different “looking glass.” :D
