I Hate This Old Thing

Frugal

Look at this. It’s our old CRT computer monitor.

Do these things die, or do they just slooooooowly fade away? Because the picture quality stinks. My son uses it to do his schoolwork on this computer, and after an hour or so, his eye is horribly bloodshot. And look how close the monitor is to his face if he sits in the chair– like, three inches! The CRT monster is HUGE! This isn’t a tiny desk, either. I can’t believe we used to use these clunkers for our computers… but I guess that was waaaay back in the olden days, when we only spent an hour or two a week in front of it, eh?

Well, I’m breaking down and getting a new computer monitor. Buy.com has a sale going on right now, and we can get a 19″ ASUS Widescreen monitor for under $100, with free shipping! Money is tight, but I’ve had it with that awful CRT monitor and I won’t risk damage to my son’s eyesight. I am officially banning CRT monitors from this house! Buy.com has a very nice cashback program if you apply for their Visa card– $30 back! You can check out the details at the site. And remember– always search around for promo codes before ordering anything.

Also, when we eventually replace the old PC, I’ll just get a nice cheapie PC for the kids. I used to buy computers in bundles, but I have learned that I can usually get computer and monitor for less when I buy separately and shop around. And Buy.com is one of my favorite stores to shop! They constantly have sales on top of their already discounted prices. And we’ve ordered from them several times– packages arrive fast and in excellent condition.

So the kiddo will be happy to see this coming in the mail. And I’ll be very happy not to see his bloodshot eyes anymore.

Good idea! CRT monitors are sooo out of date. No one’s eyes should be exposed to this old technology – it’s time for a change. You might even find a cheap 2nd hand monitor on ebay, if you want a bigger screen.

I remember one of mine slowly fading away, I hung on as long as I could until I could scrounge up a used one from someone else. By that point the screen was so dark!

I don’t think they even make CRT monitors anymore.

GREAT POST and you aren’t doing anything wrong šŸ™‚ And yes these things die a very slow and painful death!

Aha! So these CRTs DO slowly fade! I did wonder if it was just me, or the blasted screen looked dull….

Well, it’s going to the landfill in the very near future!

Saw you on SITS! Regarding your question about commenting on blogs, you can comment on as many as you like–there really are no rules. Except Saturday Sharefest, in which the only “rule” is that you comment on the person who made a comment before you. Hope that helps, and welcome to SITS!

I don’t know if they ever die or not ’cause I have two that are still holding on. Luckily I have a lappy and I need a new one of those. I would love a high-tech desktop with a snazzy monitor and a docking station for my laptop. Would be so super cool. Great deal to get the monitor and I hope your son’s eyes keep from getting red after that.
