Have you ever seen the old movie, “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”? It starred Debbie Reynolds and was about the lady who survived the Titanic. In one scene, Molly strikes it rich with her husband when they discover a silver mine in Colorado. They suddenly find themselves with a whole boxful of cash and don’t know what to do with it, to keep it from robbers. Molly comes up with the idea of stuffing the mattress with the money, but she decides that is too obvious. Her bright idea is to stuff the cash in the woodstove! A thief would never think of looking in there.
Well, her husband didn’t think of looking in there, either. He came in from outside and thought the house was too cold. He started the fire in the woodstove, and… yes, all that money was burned.
I suppose in a way, sometimes we do the same thing. We set our savings or retirement funds in what looks like a secure place, only to have everything burn up before our eyes. The recent bank failures make this painfully clear. Some of my friends have watched most of their retirement funds go up in smoke.
Be smart and get some advice and help from someone you can trust- someone who has a lot of experience in the financial field. Maybe you’d want to see Anthony Barkate‘s website. I’m a married mom with 4 kids. We live in Upstate New York in an old 1855 house with our five pets (yes, five, *sigh*). Life is never dull, and exciting things just seem to always happen to me... why me... when I'm not running around the house fixing things, I do freelance writing and blogging. My work and opinions have appeared in Salon.com, USAToday, eHow.com, iMedia.com, the Associated Press and I've even been interviewed by TIME and The Wall Street Journal about blogging. Can you believe it?! Here is where I express my zany, creative, motherly side.
