Smith Wigglesworth

As an ardent admirer of Kathryn Kuhlman, I have heard of Smith Wigglesworth. He was a plumber in Wales, born in 1859. He was an evangelist who did AMAZING miracles of healing. I don’t know what you believe about God still doing miracles– all it takes is one or two times to logically prove that they do still happen, right?

Well, I recently purchased the “Smith Wigglesworth Devotional” book. It was compiled after his death, I believe. It is full of events and Bible teachings about believing in God for healing. The book is MIND BLOWING. You can read a quick, free sample of the book here. Pretty amazing.

Smoking Teeth

The kids are taking a health course called The Seven Pillars of Health by Dr. Dan Colbert. It’s a pretty enlightening course. This week is about “detoxifcation.” It might more accurately be called “toxification” because Dr, Colbert explains all the chemicals and toxic stuff we are exposed to on a regular basis. No wonder cancer has become the Number One cause of death of people in industrialized nations.

Of great concern is the high mercury content in amalgam dental fillings. If you think the USDA and FDA protect us, think again. Dental fillings account for FIFTY PERCENT of our toxic exposure to mercury. The FDA and other groups have been sloooooooooooooow to stop it. I found a very good video about mercury in fillings, called Smoking Teeth. I don’t always believe everything I see or hear, but just knowing that there’s 50% mercury in our dental fillings is enough to make me very concerned.

Presidential Election

While my husband is riveted to the news and stories about the presidential election, I am purposely avoiding it. It’s too stressful right now. Besides, I did my homework a long time ago and already did my homework– I know who I am voting for when the time comes. It’s not the Tooth Fairy guy from Massachusetts, it’s not the marriage-breaker guy with the white shaggy hair, it’s not even the fake conservative who is part of the Political Machine in Washington that has destroyed our country… nope. It’s the guy from Texas who insists that we abide by the Constitution, also known as Dr. No by the Congress. His last name is Paul. ;) GO RON GO!

Going to the Big Apple

It’s still a ways away, but I am slowly getting excited about my upcoming trip to New York City. I am a country girl through and through, but I like the city and its energy. It’s so full of history and things to do! I recently watched a video of how to get a MetroCard for the subway. When I lived in NYC there were no cards, you paid cash. Now, there are vending machines! The choices had me baffled and I needed to refresh myself on how to get 3 cards. Last time we were there, my credit card company froze my account because I used the card three times in a row to get 3 Metrocards (each person has to have their own). this time, I’m bringing plenty of cash!

Working Online

When I first started working online, I thought, “How easy!! Easy easy easy! I can make lots of money and it will be so easy!”

Um. NOT.

I write articles for companies, websites, advertisers. It’s pretty durn tough. For one, advertisers by nature are not the most expressive and communicative people. Their grammar is deplorable and they change their minds on a whim. It’s like trying to grasp water sometimes. So even though I work at home, there’s still tremendous pressure and the tasks are tough. At least I don’t have to wear pantyhose, though, thank God for that…..

Feast or famine, as the saying goes. When it comes to telemarketers, it’s always feasting time.

We’ve slowly incorporated more cell phones now that the kids are older. We now have five cell phones and one VoIP phone, and I’ve really enjoyed the relative quiet. Before, our landline would literally ring off the hook with calls from telemarketers and bill collectors. But the calls weren’t for us- they were for the people who had our phone number before us. Apparently, those folks had bad financial problems. When their debt collection calls got too pervasive, they ditched the number and got a new one.

…and our lovely telephone company promptly dumped that old number onto us. Sweet. Fun. SO now I was not only getting calls for OUR telemarketers, I was getting calls for THEIR telemarketers and debt collectors. My heart would always skip a beat when the phone rang. I discussed with my phone company how we could stop collection harassment for good from these calls, and the company said they’d give us a new number… but this would be our THIRD number because the one we had previously was bad, too! So we ditched our landline altogether and got a funky VoIP (Internet phone) number and I got the kids cell phones. The silent bliss lasted a few months and it was wonderful. But since September, we’ve all been bombarded with calls. Solicitors, wrong numbers, even some stop collection harassment California requests or some such stuff.

I’d heard about some Do Not Call list that the government maintains. I did a little research and found out that, according to the DoNotCall.gov website,

The National Do Not Call Registry gives you an opportunity to limit the telemarketing calls you receive. Once you register your phone number, telemarketers covered by the National Do Not Call Registry have up to 31 days from the date you register to stop calling you.

Now correct me if I am wrong, but I thought cell phone numbers did not need to be placed on the list. Isn’t it illegal for telemarketers to call us on our cell phones? We get so many calls so often that I would consider it harassment.

Anyway, I put all our numbers on the list. I find it very discouraging that we have to go to such extremes to opt out of such things. Junk mail is another thing. Why aren’t we all just “opted out” automatically? Well, we all know the answer to that: because NO ONE would ever sign up!

Here’s more information about the DO Not Call list that you may find interesting or helpful:

After you sign up, telemarketers have 31 days to remove your number from their list.

Charities, political organizations, and businesses with whom you have done commerce are exempt from the Do Not Call list. A business can keep calling you for 18 months after your last purchase! And if you sign up to “win” products, these companies have permission to call you because you voluntarily released your phone number. I always believed that those “contests” promising new windows, new siding, new cars, and new shoes are more like information farms that harvest your data for marketing later.

Your phone numbers in the Do Not Call registry are “shared” with law enforcement to “assure compliance with federal and state law.”

The Do Not Call registry applies to telemarketers calling from within the U.S. and from foreign countries. So, even telemarketers from Russia or China are not supposed to call you. How the U.S. government is able to enforce that, I don’t know.

If your number has been on the list for more than 31 days and you are receiving telemarketing calls, you can file a complaint with the government at DoNotCall.gov.

In light of the Christmas holidays right around the corner — and with all the relatives coming and all — I thought I’d give you guys a little head start on discussing politics at the family dinner table. Of course, this one is disguised in a bit of humor. If anyone takes offense, you can just sweetly smile and say, “Gee, it’s just a joke!”

From the Email Bin:

I recently asked my friends’ little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President of the United States. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there. So I asked her, “If you were President, what would be the first thing you would do?”

She replied, “I’d give food and houses to all the homeless people.” Her parents proudly beamed.

“Wow…what a worthy goal,” I told her. “But you don’t have to wait until you’re President to do that. Tell you what – you can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my driveway, and I’ll pay you $50. Then I’ll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house. How about doing something wonderful like that?”

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, “Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?”

I said, “Welcome to the <del datetime="2011-12-15T16:38:45+00:00">Republican</del> <del datetime="2011-12-15T16:38:45+00:00">Conservative</del> Tea Party.”

Her parents still aren’t speaking to me.

Everybody has them on Tuesday but I thought I’d be different and have mine on Saturday.

***

I don’t like that a lot of my pals are on Facebook all the time and not blogging as much. I don’t like all the “sharing” that goes on there. Nothing against you guys, really, but blog posts, visitors, and comments have reached an all time low on blogs– not just mine but across the board for most people, it seems. I don’t get it. Facebook is a hog! The site steals revenue and attention from our own sites, and FB makes a ton of money off of us, too. And “privacy”? That’s laughable! I think I’d much rather visit blogs and see the videos and share things on blogs. I like FB as a way to FIND blogs and websites, but I don’t want it to replace our own websites and become a catch-all for everything, which it has become. Come back, friends!!! Come back to the good side!!!!!
:iquit:

***

There are lots of rumors flying around about the financial state of the U.S. Postal Service, by news outlets and individuals alike. My husband works for the PO so we kind of have a pretty good handle on why the Postal Service is not doing so good. In case you’re wondering, here’s the poop:

1. The Postal Service is NOT in financial straights because of Internet email. That’s a myth. If anything, the Internet has improved business because people are doing scads and scads of online shopping, and shipping parcels via the USPS. My husband wears out TWO PAIRS of shoes EVERY YEAR, hopping in and out of the postal vehicle delivering packages.

2. If the Postal Service would simply raise their fees on third class bulk rate mail (aka, JUNK MAIL), they’d make a fortune. Even if it was just half a cent increase. But of course, that’s easier than it sounds because of business contracts, etc.

3. If the Postal Service would force all magazines to come wrapped in plastic wrap or kraft paper, it would save mailmen TONS of money and would increase revenue for the PO due to the extra expense for mailers. The USPS is plagued with catalogs and magazines, the bane of the postal system. For one, the loose magazines are difficult to handle, they get ripped, they are hard to case and stuff in boxes. Two, most catalogs and magazines are filled with half-naked women, greatly distracting the mailmen when they should be casing mail. It’s a sad fact of life, but it’s true. My husband finds it VERY ironic that the Postal Service makes a big deal about sexual harassment (they have to watch educational videos every so often) but the sheer amount of readily-available filth that flows through the mailboxes is staggering. Uh, hello?

4. The Postal Service does not receive one red cent of taxpayer money.

5. The Postal Service is union.

6. The Postal Service is forced- -by Congressional law– to pay HUGE amounts of money into health care, perks and pensions for their workers whether the Postal Service can afford it or not. Congress does not give one cent into the fund but forces the USPS to pay it all. No other organization is forced to do this and to pay so much, only the USPS.

7. It’s the massive pension and health care requirements legislated by Congress — NOT email on the Internet — that is forcing the USPS into bankruptcy.

That’s my 2.5 cents.

***

We have only had half inch of snow here in Upstate New York so far! It’s really unbelievable! The temperatures have been pretty nice, too. So far, it’s only gotten as low as the 20s. I like winter, so I am ambivalent. But I LOVE not having to turn on the upstairs (electric) heaters!!! I haven’t had to do it yet. This is so cool!

***

You’ve probably heard that New York State is not the most business-friendly state in the Union. The state is basically run my thugs and unions, with bloated regulations and extremely high taxes, high utilities, and expensive compensation rates. Oh yeah, New York is a great place to work! WHEN THERE ARE JOBS OF WHICH THERE ARE NONE. Hello, NYS government???

Need an example? I got one for ya. lol

Last year, my town got some sidewalks. Some of the residents had been clamoring for sidewalks on the busy street, and they finally got some (after petitioning for more than 10 years). A whole crew of guys with their heavy construction equipment came through, spending WEEKS building these sidewalks. They did a great job. I think the whole project took about 4, 5, 6? weeks.

We found out much later that the company was from Michigan. What?!?!?! A Michigan company came all this way to Upstate New York?! They stayed in hotels, ate at restaurants, and worked in our community for all those weeks?! Why didn’t the town hire a New York State construction company? Sheesh, why not a local company?! The reason was that it was too expensive to hire a New York State company. With the unions, worker’s comp, insurance, etc etc etc, it was cheaper to just pay the Michigan company for hotels, restaurants and their labor.
And that, my friends, is why New York State sucks.

***

I found a new blog friend today. Her name is Susi and she’s from Germany. She emigrated to the U.S. when she was 16. I love learning about things, and a love reading stories and hearing the perspectives from people from a foreign country. Suzi won my heart when she posted a simple “Quote of the Week” at her blog. Tears came to my eyes. Congrats to you, Suzi, on your American citizenship.

THAT, my friends, is why the United States of America under Ronald Reagan was glorious. :wubs:

***

My cat loves the bathtub. She wheedles past the shower curtain and liner, pokes her head in to make sure the spray isn’t running (she hates that), and hops in the tub. Next thing I know, I hear her lapping up the pool of leftover bath water. EWWWWWW.

***

And now I will leave you with a LOL Cat. This one made me smile.

This movie (below), the 180movie, will make you think. It’s done by Ray Comfort, who runs Way of the Master. We love his TV show. In the beginning, it has some disturbing images of World War II. It’s stuff we’ve seen in high school, but it’s still disturbing. But it certainly makes the point. And some of the people Ray interviews are very truthful. The video is worth watching. Some parts are rather sensational, but the point is made.

Abortion is a “hot” topic these days. I am against it abortion. It’s killing a baby. Murder is never acceptable. Some people say abortion should be allowed because society has “no right” to tell others what to do. That’s a poor excuse for murder. Society tells us what to do ALL THE TIME. To stop at the traffic lights, to not engage in prostitution, to not steal from the bank, to not kill off your grandmother or your sister.

I have thought about abortion for many, many years. Some say abortion is OK because that fetus is not “life.” They compare a scrambled egg with a fetus, but that’s a deception. For one, a chicken egg is UNFERTILIZED. A fetus is the result of fertilization. Secondly, a fetus is not a blob of tissue. By the age of SIX WEEKS, the baby already has eyes, limbs, a beating heart and measurable brain waves. Most abortions occur between the 6th and 9th weeks.

Abortion also makes me very angry. You see, abortion was made legal in my lifetime. In the first 35 years since Roe v. Wade, over 55 million of MY PEERS have been erased from the earth. These are people I would have known, laughed with, enjoyed my life with. Then the older generation has the GALL to complain that there are not enough workers in my generation to support Social Security. WHAT THE ****??? You killed them off, buddy!

If you saw the video, you saw that people are SO QUICK to judge this issue without really thinking deeply about it. Abortion is a serious issue. It is a shame that it is legal in this country. A SHAME. And don’t go giving me excuses about rape and incest and the coat hanger. I’ve heard it all. Did you know that there are almost 2 million babies aborted in this country EVERY DAY? That’s not rape and incest, people. The most likely candidate for abortions are upper-middle class girls under the age of 25 who abort because they are not married and a baby will interfere with their plans. Of course, it’s the girls who always bear the brunt of it, don’t they? Where are the men, supporting their women that they so proudly and easily knocked up?

Anyway, I’ve written countless letters to the editor, articles, debated with people…. there’s no denying that life begins at conception. That ending the innocent life — for whatever reason, supposedly good or bad — is murder. And that abortion is wrong. A society that accepts murder of a certain type of person is barbaric and is in danger of unraveling into chaos. Abortion is bad all around.

And you never hear from the baby, do you? Do you think that baby wants to be born? Sorry for being so vehement and ranting, but I’ve hashed this issue over for decades and I’m very passionate about it. The facts just don’t change. Who will stand up and defend the babies? I don’t get any personal gain from this and politically, I have some libertarian strain in me. I’m not trying to dictate people’s lives! I don’t like getting insults and threats (yes, I’ve been threatened before). But these are innocent babies we’re talking about!

Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless. -Isaiah 10: 1-2

My daughter got a call on her cell phone the other day. We are very cautious about answering calls because we get so many telemarketers and wrong numbers. If she does not recognize the number she does not answer the call. Usually, the callers have phone numbers like 769-0 (a true telemarketer number). The number is displayed on her cell phone screen. This time, the number was “WITHHELD.”

The caller left a voicemail, so she played it and we listened. True irony, my friends. This was the message:

Hi this is senator —- calling with an important message. I have always felt that it is important to be accessible to communicate with my constituents throughout my district….

OK, in the senator’s defense, he did eventually leave an address and phone number at the end of the voicemail. But we got tickly ribs when we saw the number was “withheld” and the first thing the message talked about was accessibility!

Irony, Take Two

Just watch the first 45 seconds of this video. It’s just TOO funny!!!

Well, funny for a second. After that, I got pretty mad. :rollpin:

Can you believe that the media will actually list poll results for Number 1, Number 3 and Number 4 and TOTALLY disregard Number 2 because the media disagrees with the candidate?! How can they get away with this?!

Have any of you heard of Ron Paul??? I think it’s a very scathing, dangerous thing for the media to censor stuff like that. They are all doing it, too. You practically need prescription glasses to read the tiny mouse print in the newspapers where they may mention this unknown guy named Ron Paul. But in most cases, there’s a media blackout about him. It’s nothing short of an encroachment on our right to know. SHAME ON THE MEDIA!

This morning I learned what “swag” means. My husband saw the word the other day (probably reading a blog over my shoulder) and asked, “What is ‘swag’? Where does that word come from?” I explained that swag is the loot bloggers (or online folks) get, usually from companies– tote bags, buttons, pens, promotional stuff, etc. But I was clueless as to the meaning of the word. Today, I visited Karen and Gerard’s blog and she said she found out that SWAG is an acronym for “Stuff We All Get.” It made me laugh out loud.

We've gotten a lot of wacky swag in the past, but the weirdest was probably the turkey gravy soda and the turkey hat.

***

I had no idea I would be “blogger sick” but I have been stricken with it severely this week. It seems that almost all my blogger friends are on a continual vacation (yay for them, though!), are working or at camp, or are visiting or visited by visitors (make sense?). So the blogs that I read each day– necessary for my daily snicker — have been dearth of updates. I have never experienced such a severe blog drought. I miss you guys! Thankfully, a few folks are still updating so I’m clinging to them until all my other pals return.

***

I’m looking forward to winter, but it’s a mixed bag. I like the cool weather, the snow, the cuddling up in a blanket to go on the computer or read a book. But all the structured stuff is in winter; summer is laid back. I work more in the winter (full time) and so do the kids with school and keeping up with the house. We also can’t travel as much. But at least I don’t have to fuss over the gardens, and I do like the structured schedule once we finally get into it again. So I’m looking forward to winter, but I have mixed feelings. I don’t like change. And it means that things will get busier. But I admit, I like the schedule and the structure of it once we get going. I’m sure the apple pies I’ve been waiting to bake this winter will make up for everything.

***

I saw a video about a town I visited this week (Catskill, NY, about 125 miles north of New York City). In the video, the guy claimed that Catskill, NY, was “located in the middle of Upstate New York.” His comment really bugged me. Does this look like the middle of Upstate NY to you?

:rippaper:
I guess it’s the middle of NYS if your sphere contains only Albany to Manhattan. :-p

I was peeved for a while after the video. As an “Upstater,” it seems we are largely ignored by the elitist politicians in Albany and New York City. They tend to view our area as a vast human wasteland, a bunch of hicks whose land is good only for corporately and internationally-owned windmills, big powerlines and gas lines to serve the voracious, power-hungry appetite of New York City. We have battled against our lands being confiscated for monster power lines and windmill farms, and now there’s a battle against “hydrofracking,” which is drilling into the underground shale for gas deposits. Problem with hydrofracking is that the companies make a toxic mix of chemicals and pump it deep into the soil, where it contaminates the underground water systems (our wells, our drinking water). Some folks in other states have gotten cancer and can set their water on fire, it’s so bad. Watch the movie GasLand for a real eye-opener.

And don’t get me going on how politicians ignore our more conservative political views!

Oh well… just another good reason why New York City should secede and become its own state. My daughter gave a great suggestion for its new name: Sodom.

***

Well, my coffee is almost gone and I’ve yet to update my other blogs. Today is also “article writing day” and I have high hopes of cleaning and organizing a few bedrooms and the living room. We’ll see….

Have a great weekend! And remember– swag is good, hydrofracking is bad! LOL

I was never one of those children who always asked “Why?” as a kid. I do remember thinking it ALL THE TIME but I wasn’t very vocally inquisitive as a very young child. I’ve since made up for it.

***

Why are “historical” movies so unhistorical and riddled with errors, even when it’s a very small matter to be historical? Ever see that movie “National Treasure”? In it, the film claims 55 men signed the Declaration of Independence. That’s wrong: 56 men signed it. I mean, why be so inaccurate when it’s such a small effort to be correct? Some people may shrug their shoulders and say “big deal,” but what if someone said you only had 2 children when you really had 3? Wouldn’t that be a “big deal” to correct it? And the Declaration of Independence is *kind of* a big deal.

***

Why does Hollywood spend SO much money and go SO out of their way to be historically accurate with period clothing, hair styles, props, sets, etc etc and then blow the whole shebang by having the characters swear like sailors and act like harlots? Hellloooo… believe it or not, people didn’t act like 21st century people in the 16th century! There were *gasp* repercussions to, for example, fornication– called children and social excommunication! People back then also didn’t have s*x on their minds as much as people in our modern culture. Human nature hasn’t changed, of course, but back then there were boundaries and social expectations of good behavior to keep it under control. Societies understood back then than a licentious society was chaotic and divided. Social order and behavior was much more stringent, but you’d never know it, watching a Hollywood film.

I love history so I am always looking for a good movie about history. I recently saw the movie “Elizabeth” about Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen of 1554, and was disgusted and disappointed. What a lousy movie, full of smut and error! Memo to Hollywood– Elizabeth did not fornicate with Robert Dudley and then become the “virgin” queen because he was so unfaithful! She did not shave her head and wear white makeup to pattern herself after a statue of Mary the mother of Jesus! Duh! Elizabeth got smallpox later during her reign, and it wrecked her appearance. She lost a lot of her hair and her face was scarred– thus the wigs and makeup.

I get upset that Hollywood does stuff like that– they view historic figures and everyday folks through their own lens of self-absorption and immorality.

But the movie costumes and hairstyles were magnificent. :-p

***

I think BBC produces the best historical movies. They are accurate not only in costume but also in behavior. They don’t always have the shiniest, glitteriest props like Hollywood has, but so what? Give me accuracy over shiny props any day. ;)

While I like Cate Blanchette’s acting and I think she resembles Elizabeth I more than any other actress, I think the best Queen Bess was Glenda Jackson in BBC’s “Elizabeth R.” That was a phenomenal series. It was accurate, outstanding, and there was no swearing and no need to depict Elizabeth as a swooning, sensuous barmaid. Don’t get me going about Helen Mirren’s manic depressive Elizabeth… yuk….

***

I’m so so so sick of hearing about the debt ceiling and debt deal. The government NEVER does what we the people want anymore. I can’t believe they’ve dug us so deep into such a financial mess. I have a mortgage and credit card debt, God forbid I couldn’t pay them off, not even a VA refinance or help from FHAHomeLoan.org would help me. But the government can do whatever they want and that’s OK??

My husband made up a very good allegory about the current debt. He said that if our country paid $100 every second, it would take over 4,000 years to pay off the current national debt. FOUR THOUSAND YEARS. Our government needs a tad more education about refinancing on Wikipedia, it seems. The real world operates a totally different way. I’m very concerned with what out future holds, but I try not to think about it too much, or I’ll get an ulcer. And with ObamaCare as our destiny, that makes it all even worse!

***

Our heat wave is over! I have been glorying in cooler weather. Cooler as in mid-80s. Hey, I’ll take what I can get. lol.

***

Why does McDonald’s food make you feel so awful after eating it? The husband came home today with a Filet O Fish for me, as a treat. I haven’t had one in a while and– after eating the real thing (fish) for a while– the sandwich seemed like fake food. After eating, I thought I was going to pass out from exhaustion. What do they put in their food that makes my heart race like a marathon and I feel so exhausted I could konk out? Hmmm…? Anyone know?

***

Do you remember those “Happiness is” snippets from the Peanuts comics? Such as “Happiness is a warm puppy”? I sometimes come up with my own little “Happiness is” phrases. I thought of one today when Livvy came to see me as I typed this:

Happiness is when your kitty clambers up on the bed to see you, nuzzles your face, and starts to purr when you whisper “Hello, sweetheart.”

I’ve seen a noticeable increase in articles, posts and Twitters about “grammar police” lately. Most of the stories run this way: a person will write about the importance of proper grammar and spelling, and the commenters usually criticize and whine that English is too difficult and that proper English doesn’t matter, anyway.

Au contraire. Proper English DOES matter. I make a career off proper grammar (as a writer). I thank God I retained enough knowledge in English to be able to make my living in this way. Good writers are very much needed today, as I’m sure you discerning people who try to interpret mangled news stories and articles realize. Proper grammar ensures that the speaker/writer communicates appropriately and accurately with the listener/reader. When it comes right down to it, proper grammar is common courtesy, too. It’s yielding to the other’s sensibilities so that the listener/reader understands your thoughts or instruction.

As a homeschooling parent, I have had my fill of difficult English grammar, year after year after year. :brudder: It’s not been easy, especially struggling through the participial poohbahs and diagramming doldrums… so I can’t say I have much love for the many snarls of English language grammar. But just because something takes great effort doesn’t mean it should be eradicated.

The kids have this saying about the English language, a running gag between us:

The only English grammar rule that does not have an exception is that every English grammar rule has an exception.

:duncehat: LOL. It’s true!

I finally figured out how to label parts of speech when I was teaching my youngest son 8th grade grammar. He’d been struggling to understand why the word “their” could be both a pronoun and an adjective, and how could you tell the difference when labeling?! I realized that when labeling parts of speech, you must look at the entire sentence to determine the word’s intention and placement, and not just interpret the singular word and it’s particular definition.

Yeah, after 35+ years of English, I finally figured that one out! Sheesh!

BUT….

Good grammar and spelling are important!

As a student, I loved English classes in school but struggled with grammar (who doesn’t?!) because it was so difficult to remain consistent and interpret it accurately. English is a crazy amalgam of languages, a mish-mash melting pot of Dutch, German, Latin, French and slang. It was a very loose language until the printing press, when the spelling and grammar was managed by printers who used their own preferred style of writing. Various regions had their own styles of grammar and spelling. Even after the printing press, the language was still extremely flexible. Go read excerpts of Lewis’ and Clark’s journals of their expeditions, and you’ll see what I mean. Talk about creative spelling!

There have been many movements over the centuries to forcefully change English grammar and spelling. One notable modern movement began in 1906 when wealthy steel magnate Andrew Carnegie started an organization called the “Simplified Spelling Board.”

I wonder how TR would have liked changing the way he signed his name to "Theodor Rosevelt."

He wanted to get rid of the effluence of letters in the English dictionary such as the unnecessary silent letters: “e” in “are”; “h” in “ghost”; “hy” in “rhyme changing it to “rime,” and etc. Theodore Roosevelt latched onto it and commanded that the government printing office make the changes immediately. He was voted down by Congress, lol.

In the mid-1960s, another guy wanted to radically alter a great deal of English spelling words, such as change friend to frend, and head to hed. It didn’t go over well in the United States, but the Australian government adopted much of the idea.

I personally prefer to leave traditional spelling and grammar alone, unless there is good reason to alter it. I dislike the social engineering philosophy in general.

I’ll share a MAJOR pet peeve with you, while I’m thinking about it- the metric system. I hate the metric system! For one, it was introduced by a bunch of humanists during the atheistic French Revolution. They’d disliked the Biblical system and wanted to overhaul everything even remotely traditional.

The French Revolution's first act for liberty and tolerance was to eradicate the liberty of thousands of "intolerants."

They even placed a dancing girl on a dais and named her the Goddess of Reason. Not a very good track record of temperance and intelligence, if you ask me.

Anyway, the United States has remained staunchly on the side of the traditional English measurement system. And I hate this push to make everything in my country metric! Our household measuring tools are even metric, and I can’t (and won’t) make heads nor tails of them. I wouldn’t mind it, I guess, if the metric system was on the back of the measuring cups and all as a choice for our European friends, but no– the metric system is on the FRONT of our measuring tools! I have to turn the tools around and hold them in my left hand to use them! :-p I hate that kind of sneaky social engineering. I stubbornly resist! lol! And you KNOW if you go to Europe they don’t have measuring cups with the English system on the fronts and metric on the backs!

Ah, I feel so much better getting that off my chest. lol

I think English grammar and spelling is important. It’s a good discipline. It’s the best method we have to communicate with each other, to make sure that we are all communicating on the same level.

And that’s why I’m proud to be a part of the grammar police. HAHA!!
