They (supposedly) based their belief by astronomical calculations. Isaac Newton, however, did some mathematical calculations of his own, on when the return of Christ would be, and he speculated the date to be 2067. I don't hold to such speculations, I just think it's best to be prepared no matter what time! It seems that Hollywood just loves 2012, though, lol.
