They’ve Found Me!

March 27, 2009

If you have left a comment here somewhere, and it was never “approved” or “published,” I have to say– with hat in hand– that I may have deleted it. But not on purpose!

I have been clobbered with spam. Are fellow bloggers experiencing the same as I am this week? I saw a drop in spam comments in February, only to be SLAMMED with junk this week! In two days, I have 435 spam comments for this blog.

Oh by the way, I run, like, 10, 11 blogs.

So…. approximately 435 spam across 11 blogs…

That’s 4,785 spam comments in TWO DAYS! Maybe more, because my New York blog gets more spam than any of the others.

This is insane. InSANE. Some of the spam is for stuff like treatment for acne or that STUPID Acai berry thing (yeah, thanks a lot for endorsing that, Oprah), but a good portion of it is just gobbledegook. A tech support guy at Hostgator told me that excessive spam can cause the hosting server to crash, or cause your blog’s database to crash. So there’s more to spam than just trying to get us to buy crap.

Well, I used to comb through the spam every day or so, searching for real comments. I can’t anymore. I have to, you know, comb my hair from time to time, maybe cook a meal or vacuum the floors? Hello, spammers? Can I please go back to doing that, is that OK with you???? Grrrrrrrrr.

Anyway, I can’t keep up with it. I have to hit “Delete” with one swift stroke. I just can’t spend 45 minutes a day going through pages and pages of the filthiest crap I’ve ever read, looking for possible needles in a haystack. If you’ve left a comment and it’s been deleted… I’M SORRY! Send me a message at my Contact Form, and I’ll put you in the whitelist.

Rebecca! I was having the SAME problem, though nowhere near the number. My eyeballs needed washed in bleach after a few of the spam comments I received. ARGH. I downloaded a WordPress plugin about 3-4 weeks ago and I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ONE SINGLE SPAM COMMENT SINCE.

The plugin is WP-SpamFree. Here is the link:

I hope it will work for you as well as it has worked for me.

Cindy– I have heard of that plugin, but I did doubt how effective it is. Thanks for your mini review, I’m going to try it!

I feel for you. I had the same problem on my photoblog so I installed the Did you pass math plugin and haven’t had a single spam since. It just inserts an easy math question into the comment form that must be answered before the comment will post.

    Good luck with everything.

I was doing entrecard drops when I came across your blog and with interest I read this post. I have been talking to quite a few people who are going through something similar.

We have managed to solve this issue at BlogNet Awards and Success BlogNet( you dont want to know how much spam we were getting…yikes!)

We found a plugin that is just awesome! It is called Ban and is a wordpress plugin. It was easy to set up and now we have cut this annoying problem by over 90%. As soon as we get a spam bot/person, we load it into the Ban and it is Bang they are gone.

I hope this is of use to you.

    • Rebecca Says:

Hi Diane! Thanks for that great information. I actually DO have the Ban plugin installed ona few of my blogs. I regrettably say that I don’t use it all that much. You see, I have a dozen blogs… and going over all the spam, copying and pasting all those ip numbers and putting them in Ban, for each and every blog, on a constant basis… it is too laborious. I spent more time putting stuff in Ban than deleting the spam outright.

  4. TheSnackHound Says:

YES! And the spam has gotten sneakier. No longer is it oodles of links talking about some celebrity who lost her clothes somehow or some “little blue pill” but they are more shifty. I got a few “thanks for that!” ‘s on 20 posts from the same ISP, etc.

    • Rebecca Says:

Snack Hound– aren’t they EEEEEEVIL?! Boy, that burns me up, too!

      Jan– same here!

Denford– oh dear. I think you are probably right. Those spammers are sneaky little devils. Thanks for that information, I’ll be sure to remember.

  5. Jan from BetterSpines Says:

I get monkeys typing a.k.a. gobbledygook, and “nice” comments from 10 different people from the same website, and “sweet” questions from e-mail addresses which don’t exist, and apparently legitimate comments which are backlinked to porn sites. Unfortunately, it needs a human to sort through these, because (in my opinion) they are not technically spam. What to do?

  6. Denford Says:

This is excessive and I wonder whether it is because your site is popular or whether it is because you “mistakenly published one or more spam comments.

I found that if you mistakenly publish one, then all the crazies come out of the woodwork! I think a week without getting any of these through to your pages will solve the problem.

The plug-ins are a brilliant idea, I would try them if I were you.

  7. blueyes Says:

This is why I have Bad Behavior and WP-Ban on my site as plugins lol I actually get satisfaction adding IP numbers to the list and then see how many times they try to access the site after they have been banned. Askimet is junk if you ask me.

  8. Politicus Says:

Have you tried Akismet? It seems to be doing a great job for me as far as separating spam from legitimate comments.

    • Rebecca Says:

Yes, I use Akismet– but the thing is, I still have to comb through it to weed out any “good” comments. This is very laborious. Thanks for your comments!

  9. Terri Says:

The worse thing is that the spammers start out nicely like “love your blog” and than they launch into their spam.

  10. Christina Says:

I hate SPAM anything, especially the emails. I love your blog design BTW. It’s very pretty and neat.

  11. Jackie Says:

Know how you feel….Grrrr hate spammers!

Luckily with our email notifications we can pick it up very quickly which ruins the impact most expect.

  12. Sher Says:

Wow…I’m sorry to hear you’ve had to deal with such garbage!!! Good luck!!

    Have a great day,
    Sher :0)

  13. Carl Says:

I never understand those people who run the spamming scripts or create viruses that destroy our “puters.” I really hope they “enjoy” a slow agonizing death someday.

  14. Mizé Says:
