Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:26,27
Be watchful, and strengthen the things that remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. Revelation 3:2
There are times when I get so tired… physically tired, but also emotionally drained. as if my balloon has been poked with a pin and is slowly deflating. These are times when I avoid depressing things (like the news headlines that scream how defunct our nation is) and just keep plugging away. Like I say to my kids when they are feeling the weight of the moment, “Just ride the wave.” In other words, keep on keeping on.
I read Jean’s Word for Wednesday post before starting mine, and her thoughts echoed mine:
Students of history, though, know that all “great civilizations” come to an end. Students of Christian history know that they come to an end when the citizens believe that their rulers and their government are the reason for their greatness, when they cease to acknowledge the blessings of God. …We are certainly in that time frame…. I don’t know that this process can be prevented at this point, or even delayed.
I don’t know, either. I suppose this is the great question of our age. Yes, every generation has had it “apocalyptic” fears– especially after the gruesomeness of World War I, II, Vietnam, the Cuban Missle Crisis, etc. But never before in history have we ever been so close to global collapse and control, never. This is what makes it all so different.
Anyway, despite the fears, despite the worries, and despite the fatigue, we must continue to run, to fight, to strengthen, so that we may not become disqualified when the time comes.
Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridgegroom.
Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish tooktheir lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamos.
But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight a cry was heard: Behold! The bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!
Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish siad to the wide, “Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.”
But the wise answered, saying, “No, lest there should not be enough for us and for you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.”
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, “Lord, Lord, open to us!” But he answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.”
Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
Matthew 25: 1-13

“In other words, keep on keeping on.”
So true! I’m reminded of C.S. Lewis’s “The Weight of Glory,” in which he points out (I’m paraphrasing loosely) that any country, and the whole world, for that matter, are temporary and of no ultimate importance — while YOU are quite permanent. You’re permanent, and the people that you touch are quite permanent, so you all are incredibly important. So, when we all work within our spheres of influence, we’re tending to the truly critical business. The “bigger stuff” can take care of itself. And, paradoxically, if everyone (or even most people) love and obey God, the “bigger stuff” will in fact take care of itself very well indeed. And if not — there’s no help for it anyway. Or so it seems to me.

We are of a mind today, Rebecca, and I find your choice of the ten virgins parable interesting. I’ve been thinking my efforts in this time should go toward the unsaved, but this reminds me that weary Christians need to be encouraged, as well.
Be encouraged, sister. He will return, just as He said He would.
