How Do Casinos Make Money?

A casino is a facility where people can gamble and play games of chance. Casinos usually have hotels, restaurants and bars and offer a wide variety of gambling options. Some casinos are very famous, such as the Bellagio in Las Vegas and the Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco.

Gambling is a huge business and the biggest casinos make crazy profits. But how do they make all that money? Casinos are not engineered to make individual players lose, but rather to have all the gamblers who play there lose in aggregate. They accomplish this by setting up games with odds and payouts that have a negative expected value for the player, and positive expected value for the casino.

To keep people playing, casinos often have very famous acts perform at their properties to draw them in and they also have food and drink concerns that must be managed as well. Often the food and drinks are provided at no cost to the gamblers, even alcoholic beverages. Casinos don’t want players to know the time so there are no clocks on the walls and they use red as a color theme because it is believed that it makes people feel more energized and excited.

To encourage people to come back and gamble more, casinos extend what are called comps, which are complimentary things like free hotel rooms, meals, alcoholic drinks and sometimes even free casino chips. For very high rollers, who are known as whales, casinos will often extend even more extravagant inducements such as free spectacular entertainment and transportation and luxury living quarters.
